Denmark Bets on Exports to Germany to Beat Offshore Wind Doldrum

Denmark, a leader in offshore wind energy, is facing a slowdown in its domestic offshore wind market. To combat this, the Nordic country is shifting its focus to exporting its excess wind power to neighboring Germany.

The Danish offshore wind industry has experienced a sharp decline in installations over the past few years. In 2021, only 276 MW of new offshore wind capacity was added, a significant drop from the 604 MW added in 2020. This slowdown is attributed to a lack of new projects being approved by the Danish government.

To offset this domestic doldrum, Denmark is now looking to increase exports of its wind-generated electricity to Germany. Denmark has an ambitious target of reaching 70% renewable energy by 2030, and exporting its surplus wind power is seen as a key strategy to achieve this goal.

"We have a unique opportunity to export our green energy to our neighbors, particularly Germany, which has a great need for it," said Dan Jørgensen, Denmarks Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities.

Germany is a major market for Danish wind exports, with the two countries connected by the Kriegers Flak interconnector, which went into operation in 2020. In 2021, Denmark exported around 15 TWh of electricity to Germany, accounting for approximately 20% of Denmarks total wind power generation.

The Danish Energy Agency estimates that the countrys offshore wind capacity could reach up to 10 GW by 2030, with a significant portion of this power destined for export to Germany and other neighboring countries. This would help Denmark solidify its position as a leading exporter of renewable energy in the region.

As the global demand for clean energy continues to grow, Denmarks ability to leverage its offshore wind resources and export surplus power to Germany could prove to be a valuable asset in the transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
